There are about 25.8 million Americans living with some form of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, often called children's or juvenile diabetes, occurs when the pancreas does not produce insuline, the hormone that converts sugar, starch and other foods into energy for the body. Type 2 diabetes, often referred to as adult onset diabetes, occurs when the body either does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin available in the body. Type 2 diabetes is on the rise in the United States with the increase of obesity. Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are diabetes mellitus. Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes mellitus that occurs during pregnancy and may disappear after delivery. A rare form of diabetes is diabetes insipidus. Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus is caused by a defect of the kidneys. Central diabetes insipidus is caused when the pituitary gland does not produce enough anti-diuretic hormone for the body to properly absorb fluid.
